THE lives of several passengers of a minibus were spared when a truck driver managed to avoid his laden rice hauler slamming into a minibus.
The Guyana Chronicle was informed that the driver of the truck was forced to take evasive measures and slammed into a building, damaging two vehicles in the process after the minibus driver attempted a U-turn on a busy public road.
According to persons on the scene, the truck was heading west when the minibus made the U-turn despite the flow of traffic from both sides of the road.
As a result, the driver of the truck pulled to the left shoulder of the road and avoided slamming into pedestrians and persons selling on the opposite side.
Despite taking evasive action, he still grazed the minibus but caused extensive damage to a parked motorcar before slamming into the administrative building of the state-owned GuyOil Gas Station at Victoria, East Coast Demerara.
The development caused the flow of traffic on both sides of the road to be reduced to snail’s pace as onlookers slowed to get a glimpse of the accident.
Traffic ranks from the ECD visited the scene soon after the accident and sought to regulate the traffic flow, as the drivers involved in the accident were escorted to the police station for questioning.
Persons said the minibuses u-turning at the particular location endangers the life of persons traversing the roadway.
The destruction of a section of the GuyOil building resulted in the management having to temporary close operation, until the area was clear and safe for the recommencement of work.
