HEAVY winds accompanied by lightning, thunder and heavy rainfall mid-morning Friday sent many persons living along the Essequibo Coast cowering in fear.

Such was the intensity of the storm, that not only was there a disruption of electricity, but several trees were uprooted, and many houses either lost their roofs or were severely damaged.

The incident reportedly occured around 10:30hrs, and lasted for almost half-an-hour.

Word is that those living at Lima Village fared the worst, with as many as four persons claiming to have lost their roofs.

Melly Lall said she was sitting in her veranda when she saw her neighbour running pell-mell out of their yard.
“My neighbour house top flew off,” Lall said. “Then two houses away, more zinc sheet flew off. Persons were running out of their houses helter skelter.”

According to information reaching the Guyana Chronicle, many have suffered tremendous losses due to the storm, and the entire region has been plunged into darkness ever since.

When contacted, officials at the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) confirmed that the storm had caused some damage at the Lima plant, but that technicians were doing their best to remedy the situation.
