Dear Editor,
“While Nero fiddles, Rome burns” has now become applicable to the present state of affairs of the management of Georgetown, the nation’s capital.
Being managed by Her Worship, Mayor Patricia Chase-Green, in tandem with Town Clerk Royston King; whose “kingmanship quite rightfully is devoid of monarchy, royalty and a crown”.
Nevertheless, with the historical and famous landmark of the City Hall, deteriorating rapidly at “supersonic speed” so too, are two bridges that connect Merriman Mall, from North Road, ahead of Bourda Street to Church Street.
Editor, the two wooden structures are not in a state of rehabilitation/repairs; but rather in need of a complete replacement, since both bridges are dangling precariously for a virtual collapse into the converging canals. Who is the councillor, responsible for the Bourda/ South Cummingsburg ward? Was this pertinent issue ever discussed at a Council meeting, within the last three weeks and if so, would it be given the utmost priority it deserves?
Meanwhile, with “all being involved and consumed, in this dereliction of duty” of the numerous vendors that occupy the Mall, remains a: “gross insult” to the individuals, who pay stall rental to the Council. Would a picket exercise and demonstration in front of the City Hall, suffice? Needless to say countless shoppers on the Mall, at Bourda Market and school children rely daily on the bridges, as an interconnection for schools and transportation twice daily.
Finally, though not life-threatening at the moment, the dilapidated structures can still cause immense damage to limbs; more so, the elderly and by extension the women folk. As a consequence it’s a “sad indictment” on the PNCR-dominated M&CC, led by a female who is a member of the Party’s Central Executive Committee.
By the way, can Chief Constable Foo publicly indicate, upon whose authority he empowers his charges to operate as a local arm of the Venezuelan Syndicators?: That the “shakers down” of vendors, joggers, and passersby are frequently being preyed upon for vegetables, other edibles and cash. Would our caring “Human Rights Association; the Guyana Police Force and the Prerogative for Mercy Committee (if they still exist) care to comment”! That on 07-03-18 – a known enforcer publicly said: “Wire or jail, is Pepe ah really need”. What is Pepe’s issue with the individual, which entails a severe whipping? On 09-03-18 within the vicinity of Bourda and Regent Streets, another City Constable shaker approached a passerby to purchase a newspaper, which resulted in a “heated verbal exchange” with the latter indicating “I ain’t buying no papers fuh yuh”. Apparently embarrassed, the rank as the aggressor pursued a “physical confrontation of pushing and shoving”.
On that ill-fated morning shortly after 06:00hrs, a female sergeant, in an unbelievable comment, blurted out: “like is a bullet yuh want” and after retreating to the confines of the outpost, insinuated: “Arrest he, but the individual continued his journey of walking, eastward on the pavement.
