SHEMAR Britton was in fine form this weekend, as he captured the Open 2350 category when he defeated Stephen Chui in the final of the Westchester Table Tennis Championships held at the Westchester TTCenter.

The tournament is a United States of American Table Tennis Association USATT-rated 4-star tournament, with $5 000+ in prizes.

It draws players from across North America and around the world. The tournament is recognised as one of the largest monthly table tennis tournaments held in the USA.

Nigel Bryan also participated in the under 2350 category and secured a bronze medal after losing out to eventual finalist Stephen Chui.

Britton, coached by Sydney Christophe and supported by his Guyanese fans, followed up his win in the 2350 category with a quarterfinal finish in the 2500 Open category

Other successful Guyanese were women’s senior Natalie Cummings who finished in the semifinals of the 2050 category, having lost in a close encounter to eventual tournament winner, and 2017 Caribbean Girls’ singles bronze medallist Priscilla Greaves who lost in the 1900 division in the group stages.

National men’s table tennis champion Christopher Franklin, who was seeking to recapture his form, reached the round of 16 in the 2500 Open category.

Joel Alleyne lost in the semi-final of the 2250 category while Priscilla Greaves lost in the 1900 category

The team is being supported by 11-time national Men’s champion and 1992 Caribbean Men’s champion Sydney Christophe, who will conduct a four-day training camp with the team before they depart for Australia on March 30, 2018.

Caribbean Women’s veteran champion Guyanese Mrs Diane Chance provided coaching duties while videoing for analysis was supported by Guyanese Shawn Abrams

The tournament is being used as preparation for Guyana’s national table tennis team which will be selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games scheduled for Gold Coast, Australia, April 4-16, 2018.
