Security guard shoots aggressive mango thief

AN alleged mango thief was shot Thursday afternoon by an armed guard attached to A. Ally and Sons General Store, at Sheet Anchor, East Canje, after he was seen in a fruit tree on the premises.

Dharmendra Etwaroo, 27, of Nandram Street, Canefield Settlement, also in East Canje, was shot in his left foot and had to be taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where up to press time, he was still there.

According to the shooter, he was manning the main entrance of the business entity, when a customer alerted him that someone had jumped over the back fence.

The man said that after telling his manager what he had learnt, he cautiously made his way to the back of the building where he saw Etwaroo in the tree and confronted him, asking him to descend.

The shooter said that Etwaroo was in the process of complying when he threw the bag of green mangoes he was carrying at him and attempted to escape. And that’s when he shot him, the man said.

The injured man, who is a known character, was recently released from the New Amsterdam Prison, where he served a sentence for break and enter and larceny .

Meanwhile, the shooter, who has been employed by Senitel Security Service for over 10 years, has been detained and is assisting the police with their investigation.
A pistol and 10 live rounds of ammunition have been recovered, and are being processed by ballistic experts.
