THE Mahila Mandalee, the women’s arm of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha on the Essequibo Coast, on Saturday distributed grocery hampers to 20 elderly women in various communities in Region Two.

The simple handing-over ceremony was held at the Queenstown Mandir and president of the Essequibo Coast Praant, Pandit Kaydar Persaud gave brief remarks on the role of women in society.

Secretary of the Mandalee in Essequibo, Vidyawattie Changur, commended the women for their sacrifices to society and said the activity was done to recognise the elders in observance of International Women’s Day on March 8.

The elders receiving hampers hailed from Golden Fleece, Perseverance, Cullen, Annandale, Queenstown, Affiance, Reliance, Bushlot, Sparta and Pomeroon River.

Baby Loaknauth of Golden Fleece, who received one of the hampers, thanked the women’s organisation and said it will be of great help to her.
