By Michelangelo Jacobus
THE Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) will embark on its second event for 2018 on Saturday, March 10, at 10:00hrs with the hosting of a lifting exhibition to celebrate Guyanese women in powerlifting, just two days after International Women’s Day (March 8).
Speaking to Chronicle Sport, GAPLF’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Runita White revealed; “Seeing Thursday is International Women’s Day, on Saturday we’ll have a lifting exhibition to celebrate Guyanese women in powerlifting. Some of the lifters who we’ll have are: Nadina Taharally, Lisa Oudit, Jacky Toney, Tineisha Toney and Ede Tyrell.”
White also indicated that the federation will take the opportunity to raise awareness of the sport; “What we’re basically trying to do is provide a forum for those who want to learn about the sport amd improve their technique. We are going to answer any questions that they have. Most importantly, we’re trying to break down the stereotypes that people have as it relates to women who powerlift.”
She maintained that while “there are more women in the sport at present, we also have women who are curious about the sport and how to start their journey in powerlifting”.
The venue set for the exhibition is at fast food restaurant ‘Pollo Tropical’ on Camp and Robb Streets opposite Republic Bank. The fast food franchise is on board the event as a major sponsor.
