BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (CMC) – Kamau Leverock hammered a half-century as Bermuda followed up their nail-biting Twenty20 victory over the Cayman Islands the previous day, by romping to a four-wicket victory over the Caribbean side in a one-day international at the Belgrano Athletic Club ground here on Sunday.
Bermuda edged the Cayman Islands by four wickets with one ball to spare to win the ICC World T20 Americas Sub Regional Qualifier tri-series at the same venue on Saturday.
Although Sunday’s victory was by the same wicket margin, Bermuda raced home with more than 15 overs to spare, despite a five-wicket haul by 35-year-old Jamaica-born off-spinner Alessandro Morris, in a match reduced from 50 overs-a-side to 40 because of a delayed start.
Leverock, 23, produced a solid all-round display, claiming one wicket and running out the Cayman Islands’ Barbados-born captain Ramon Sealy for four.
Omar Willis, in at number three, was the top scorer for the Cayman Islands with three fours and a six in his 59-ball 42, but two wickets apiece for Kwasi James, Chare Smith and Jacobi Robinson helped dismiss their opponents for 149 in the 38th over.
In reply, Leverock and captain Terryn Fray , put Bermuda in firm control with a 100-run stand inside 14 overs.
Leverock was first to go when he became Morris’ first victim on his way to impressive figures of five for 20 from seven overs.
But Leverock had already done the damage, striking three sixes and eight fours in his 41-ball 68. Fray went nine runs later for 33 before Macai Simmons helped Bermuda over the line with an unbeaten 22 from 25 balls.
Hosts Argentina, who lost all four matches in the T20 tournament – a first step on the way to the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020 – were scheduled to engage the Cayman Islands yesterday and Bermuda today in the two remaining ODIs.
