CHADWICK Walton scored a savage innings of 169 that paved the way for a massive Jamaica Scorpions win in their Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Festival game against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Coolidge Cricket Ground on Monday.
Walton’s innings helped the Scorpions to 329-7 off their 50 overs, leaving the Hurricanes with an uphill task – a task they failed to accomplish as they crumbled to 181 all out, a ball into the 42nd over.
Choosing to bat, Walton lost opening partner Steven Taylor for 10 and watched as Rovman Powell was run-out for one.
It was only when Andre McCarthy came to the crease that things settled down for the Scorpions. His 36 from 53 deliveries was extremely beneficial to Walton, who unlike his teammates, scored freely, going at a run-a-ball until he got to three figures.
Brandon King offered some support after McCarthy fell, scoring 38 from 46 deliveries, until he chanced his luck once too often.
Enter the fray Andre Russell, the big right-hander was almost as savage as Walton had become, though an over where the latter struck Justin Athanaze for four consecutive sixes was unparalleled.
Russell took 23 balls to score his second half-century of the tournament, an unbeaten 51 that was punctuated by the last ball of the innings going screaming over mid-wicket for a flat six.
In reply, the Hurricanes never really threatened, losing Montcin Hodge for one, and opening partner Kofie James for 18.
There was some fight from Keacy Carty, who scored 33, and Terance Ward, who made 43, but it wasn’t enough, especially against the bowling of McCarthy, who ended with 5-26.
Odean Smith bowled very quickly for the Scorpions, beating his victims for pace to end with 3-15.
There was also a wicket apiece for Powell, 1-35, and Fabian Allen, 1-54.
The result means the Scorpions move to 15 points in third place in Group B but still find themselves two points behind Kent on 17. The Guyana Jaguars lead the group on 18 points but have played a game more than Kent and the Scorpions.
