Man stabbed to death at Vergenoegen

A 30-YEAR-OLD man was stabbed to death during a fight at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, on Sunday night.

Dead is Nair Khan a porter of Bud Street, Line Top, Vergenoegen, and whose body was found on Monday morning in a pool of blood. Relatives believe that he was stabbed and left to bleed to death at the hands of a friend and others on Sunday night.
According to the police, Khan was found with a gaping wound on his left hand around 06:00hrs on Monday. An investigation has revealed that about 22:00hrs on Sunday, Khan and a male who is currently being sought, were imbibing at the suspect’s Burn Street, Vergenoegen home when an argument erupted over an accusation that the victim was having a relationship with the suspect’s wife.

However, relatives of Khan have disputed the latter. They told the Guyana Chronicle during a visit to the area, that the young man and a friend were imbibing at a popular bar along the public road at Vergenoegen, on Sunday night. It is said that sometime later, the two men went to the friend’s home where they continued imbibing and after the alcohol was finished the suspect abused his mother-in-law and common-law wife, as he called for more liquor.

Neighbours reported that Khan intervened and was physically assaulted by his friend who picked-up a knife and stabbed the man to his left side. They said that the man was placed in a chair where he kept moaning and repeatedly asked for help. They alleged that the man was stabbed on or before midnight on Sunday.

Khan’s aunt, with whom he worked as a porter, told this newspaper that persons at the scene recalled seeing Khan being removed from the house where he was stabbed and placed on the parapet. She said neighbours reported hearing him moaning and calling out for help until around 04:00hrs on Monday. She said the suspect and his in-laws later placed Khan’s shoes neatly next to his body.

At around 06:00hr on Monday , the man’s aunt reported that the suspect’s mother-in-law visited her home, located a few houses from the scene of the incident at Burns Street and in a frantic state reported that Khan appeared “dead” on her parapet.
“She only come here because he dead and when they realise he dead they tell the son-in-law to run away and hide,” the woman noted. Reports are that blood was seen at the home of the suspect, where his relatives are adamant he was stabbed. The dead man’s relatives also noted that the young man recently “started seeing somebody” and refuted reports that he was having an affair with the suspect’s common-law-wife.

Investigators have since obtained a statement from the suspect’s wife who was present when the incident occurred. The body is presently at Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem and investigations into the murder are ongoing.
