Stanleytown man killed in accident

FORTY-FIVE-YEAR old Rohan Pooran called “Pompey” lost his life at around 21:00hrs Saturday night after he was hit by motor pickup GKK 6238, on the Stanleytown Public Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

The driver of the car which hit Pooran is a popular mechanical engineer and has been detained. He is assisting police with their investigations.

According to an eyewitness, Nicole Baird, the now deceased was consuming alcohol at the nearby Smith’s Grocery  at Lot 48 Stanleytown, when he left the group of imbibers and ventured out on the main thoroughfare.

There, he was seen stooping on the roadway.
Moments later, a loud impact was heard. Initially, persons were of the belief that the driver may have collided with a donkey, but on a closer inspection, it was Pompey who was struck down.

Pooran of Lot 58 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, sustained injuries to the head and was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He leaves to mourn a teenage son and a brother.
