ESPN, Hustlers and Showstoppers secure quarter-final spots
ON Friday night the round of 16 of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ West Demerara/East Bank Demerara Zone was contested on the Pouderoyen tarmac and saw ESPN, Hustlers and Showstoppers making light work of their opponents to book quarter-final spots.
With every game ESPN seem to be growing stronger; in their round of 16 clash with Parfait Hardball they managed to keep a clean sheet while putting four goals past their opponents.
The Lythcott brothers broke Parfait’s defence to give them a 2-0 lead; first Trevon ‘German’ Lythcott netted in the 14th minute while his younger brother Kevon doubled ESPN’s score in the 17th minute.
Pernell Schultz added the icing on the cake in just a minute later with a ‘Guinness Goal’ to make it 4-0.
A comfortable 3-0 victory for the Hustlers over Mocha came courtesy of a Kwame Holder brace and a solitary strike from Sunil Logan. Holder’s pair of goals came in the fourth and 17th minutes while Logan netted in the 15th minute.
Meanwhile Showstoppers handed Harmony Ballers a 2-0 loss, with late goals from Dexroy Adams and Stephon Jupiter ensuring their side secured a spot in the quarter-finals. Adams opened the scoring in the 14th minute while Jupiter made it 2-0 in the 17th.
Meanwhile a thrilling encounter between West Side Ballers and Patentia Money Team ended at 2-2 after normal time with the winner decided from the penalty spot.
The West Side Ballers had taken a 2-0 advantage after Kevin Frank scored a late ‘Guinness goal’ in the 32nd minute only for Patentia to equalise through Kenton Boyce in the 34th minute.
The resulting penalty kicks saw the West Side Ballers emerge 1-0 winners.
Also winning from the spot were Boom Bang who beat Up-Like-7 by 2-1 on penalties while Ballers Empire had a 2-0 victory via the same method over Brothers United.
The Dream Team needled Harmony Warriors with Orville Stewart grabbing the only goal of the game in the 14th minute.
Eon King’s 13th minute’s strike was just enough for Rising Stars to beat Zeelugt FC and ensure progression to the quarter-finals, which will be played on Tuesday (February 13) at the same venue. In addition the semi-final matches will also be played on the same night. (Michelangelo Jacobus)
