POLICE have arrested a man in his late 20s who has allegedly confessed to raping a five-year-old girl.

According to the child’s mother, on Friday last, she left home at around 19:30hrs to run an errand a short distance away and when she returned, she found her daughter sitting quietly “clumped up” on a chair.

The 27-year-old mother said she found the child’s behaviour strange, and on enquiring from her what happened, the child reportedly said that she was raped by her step-uncle. Not far away from where the child was sitting a used condom was found.

The accused, according to reports, resides in the lower-flat of the building where the victim and her mother and step-father live.

The child was taken to the police and a report was made. The suspect was subsequently arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
