A GROUP of basketball aficionados, both local and overseas, pooled their resources to make a contribution of balls to the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), in an effort to help the organisation realise its goals of expanding the game through youths.
Jermaine Softley, Joel Waithe, Joel Simon, Othniel Greene, Narcom Parris and Famhi Waddell who all would have played the game in their ‘heydays’, were impressed with YBG’s approach to fostering holistic development of the sport and more so coach Lugard Mohan’s dedication to the programme, and felt that is imperative to help sustain the club’s vision.
Softley was on hand at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to make the presentation to YBG, which was collected by Mohan, during one of their regular weekend sessions.
Mohan, one of the country’s most popular figures in the sport, turned his attention to coaching after retiring from the game, but chose to focus primarily on the youths. He has embraced YBG’s philosophy of using the younger generation to foster the growth in Guyana.
The former hot-shot point guard thanked the group for their donation, calling it “timely”, since over the years, YBG has seen an overwhelming interest shown by parents and students to join the programme.
Softley said the donation is the first of many to YBG and encouraged others to contribute. Persons desirous of donating can reach out to Simon and Parris in New York, Waddell in Miami, Florida and Softley in Guyana.
