LABA ‘Night with the Stars’ set for today

A ‘NIGHT with the Stars’ is planned for this evening, where ‘Basketball meets Fashion and Awards Promotion’.
The event is being hosted by the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) in collaboration with Bankers Trust Falcons and others at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.
An exhibition match, Linden versus Georgetown clash will see Ravens out of Georgetown face Linden champions Victory Valley Royals.

The opening basketball match will showcase the best junior players from Linden where an east Mackenzie side will face the might of the west Wismar line-up from 19.00hrs.
That will be followed by several awards being distributed to some of Linden’s brightest stars in the field of sports. Topping that list will be this promotion’s Sportsman-of-the-Year Daniel Williams and Sportswoman-of-the-Year Chantoba Bright.
Also scheduled to collect accolades are Carifta Games gold medallist over 100 metres Compton Caesar and South American 400-metre champion DeShanna Skeete, among others.

These two very outstanding athletes ensured with others that District 10 remained the athletics hot spot in Guyana by retaining the National Championships recently.
They will be joined by some of the brightest prospects in Linden basketball which should include Yannick Tappin, one of Guyana’s top basketball player Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai, Harold Adams who achieved the record of scoring 111 points earlier this year in a single LABA league game.
There will also be the designs of uniforms and clothing on display from two of Linden leading designers, Ms Setra O’Selmo and Crystal Lam, along with the honouring of a number of persons who have continued to excel sports and education in the mining town over the years.

The Amelia’s Ward South Stars cricket side, male and female Linden cyclists are all to be given recognition tonight.
A number of coaches including Abdulla Hamid, Johnny Gravesande and Ann Gordon, and Guyana’s lone FIBA referee over the past ten years, Sherwyn Henry, will also be honoured.
Also on the list are companies like Bosai Minerals Group, Banks DIH, Ansa McAl Trading and Ramesh Trophy Stall among others. A number of radio and television personalities will also be given recognition when the full list is announced tonight.

President of LABA, Lawrence Simon, promised that this will be an annual promotion to cap the season for the association. He noted that many persons who did not make the cut this year will likely be so honoured next year.
