— extends amnesty to Dec 31
AFTER raking in some $138M during the one-month amnesty period recently, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has decided to extend the facility until December 31.
Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis told the Guyana Chronicle on Friday that the response on the last day, December 15, was so overwhelming that the municipality made a decision to have an extension.
She offered that for those persons who still cannot afford to pay the sums owed, the M&CC is willing to work out a payment plan so that the sums can be paid in parts.
In a statement on Saturday, the M&CC said property owners made a special request for the extension of the amnesty, explaining their inability to access the facility during the specified time, due to issues with the transfer of ownership of properties and immediate availability of funds.
“The Council is aware that many property owners are making serious efforts to put themselves in order. As a result, the Council is willing to accommodate their request at this time,” the statement said.
Early last month, the City Council had announced an amnesty for interest on rates accrued from November15 to December15, 2017, which allowed ratepayers to settle their outstanding accounts with the Council.
The City Treasurer’s Department would be open on Saturdays from 09:00hrs to midday to facilitate payments.
“Therefore, the Council is encouraging all ratepayers to take full advantage of this extension to settle their accounts with the Georgetown City Council.”
