… GDF, Western Tigers play to tame draw

FRUTA Conquerors needled newcomers New Amsterdam United (1-0) for a positive start in the third installation of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League, while Western Tigers rallied to a draw against title-holders Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on opening night at the Leonora Track and Field Facility on Sunday.

Boasting a very youthful squad, Fruta Conquerors, who finished second in the league last year, picked up an important three points, thanks to their best player, Eon Alleyne, who netted the game’s lone goal in the 78th minute.
In the other clash, newcomers Western Tigers showed promise of being serious contenders, after coming from a goal down to pick up a point against the league’s title-holders, the GDF.

Thirteen minutes into the highly anticipated clash, Carlos Adams put the Army in command with his goal, but Western Tigers kept up the pressure and finally picked up the equaliser through Andrew Murray in the 27th minute.
Both teams failed to capitalise on their chances at goal, and settled for the entertaining draw.

The Elite League will now head to Linden for another double-header at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground on Friday.
In the opening game, Buxton United and Ann’s Grove will collide at 18:00hrs, and the home side Milerock will tackle Victoria Kings at 20:00hrs.

This year, the winners will receive $5M, second-placers $2M, third-placers and fourth-placers will pocket $1M and $500 000 respectively.
E.C Vieira Investments, Camex Restaurants, Impression’s Branding, Marics (Honda) and Automobile Power Products are the league’s sponsors. All games will attract a $500 entry fee.
