LOCAL songster Juke Ross earlier this week released a video to go along with his latest single, “Shadows in the Dark”, which has been getting nothing but high praise since its release some two weeks ago, leaving fans and critics continuing to sing the gospel of big things in store for Ross and his music.

In the video, the 23-year-old, in what is fast becoming his signature style, sits with his guitar in his ever-present baseball cap and belts out a touching, abstract tune.

“Shadows in the Dark is about a lingering sadness fueled by loss,” Ross said in an interview with Pigeons and Planes.

It’s also about “A realisation of not only loss, but despair, and a second surrendering; surrendering to be saved by what’s lost,” he said, adding:
“I just wanted to write a song that would make me feel less sad. There’s no way I could’ve felt immediately happy, and so, less sad would have to do.”

Described as “one of the most cinematic songs”, the poignant track grips listeners from the get-go, as Ross stays true as the emotional singer that everyone came to know him as with his hit single, “Colour Me”.

Just like “Colour Me”, “Shadows in the Dark” is also a simple song, depending mostly on the melody of Ross’ vocals, backed by his guitar. And as has been pointed out before, “It’s in this simplicity that Ross’ musicianship shines.” He truly glows in this one.
“Days of old we spend the night
light the spliff to ease the fight
sit around and drift away
wake right up and start again,” reads the first verse of the simple, yet passionate song.
“Catch me now as I fall too deep
catch me now as my soul is weak
catch me now in my darkest days
catch me now before I lose my ways,” the vocalist pleads towards the end of the song.

“Shadows in the Dark” is the first song to be released since Ross, whose real name is Hubert Norville, signed with Republic Records earlier this year.
