A 34-YEAR-OLD Port Kaituma businessman was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for trafficking cannabis, an offence he allegedly committed on October 22 at the Port Kaituma waterfront.
Sheldon Salomon, a father of 10, denied that on the day in question, he had in his possession 90 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
According to Police Prosecutor, Arwin Moore, on that day the police, who were acting on a tip-off, that Salomon was selling narcotics, went to his business premises to effect a search.
The accused, however, on seeing the lawmen, reportedly ran to his backyard, but a rank who gave chase saw when he threw a black plastic bag into an old tyre.
The rank retrieved the parcel which contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Prosecutor Moore objected to the businessman being granted his pretrial liberty on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the charge.
The chief magistrate who acquiesced, remanded Salomon and transferred the matter to the Matthews Ridge Magistrates Court for a November 8 hearing.
