Bus driver on causing death charge

A ROUTE 42-mini bus driver was on Monday released on $500,000 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Seekumar Singh of Soesdyke Back Road, East Bank Demerara is alleged to have driven minibus BLL 4749 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of 66-year-old Basil Rambarran on September 19 at Herstelling, EBD.

The 44-year-old denied the charge while his attorney, Mark Conway made an application for reasonable bail. The Chief Magistrate suspended Singh’s driver’s licence and adjourned the matter until October 30, for statements.

According to reports on the day in question about 16:45hrs Singh was proceeding south along the western lane of the eastern carriageway in his vehicle BLL 4639. Rambarran was riding a bicycle and allegedly rode across the road from west to east when the minibus crashed into him. He fell onto the roadside and sustained multiple injuries to the body. He was later pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.

The driver of the minibus was administered a breathalyzer test and found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit. Singh is expected to be charged for driving under the influence of alcohol and other traffic related charges soon.
