Free up the cultivation of industrial hemp

Dear Editor
MEMBERS of Lokono Hemplyne Enterprise based at St. Cuthbert’s Mission, Soesdyke/Linden Highway and other residents of the community, are calling on President David Granger and his APNU+AFC administration to swiftly remove the legislation for the cultivation and processing of industrial hemp and the manufacture of over 25,000 hemp products in the country.
Chairman of the Enterprise, Lemond Adrian, said that with the establishment of industrial hemp, a number of jobs will be available for the residents, so many of them will not leave the community seeking employment in the gold and diamond and forestry areas and other parts of the country.
“It will create a strong, prosperous and cohesive rural community and will prevent the drift of the population from the Mission, he stated.
The chairman emphasised that his group is working towards job creation, especially for the youth of the community so we can bring to fruition the Good and Green life for all Guyanese.
We have at St.Cuthbert’s thousands of acres of fertile lands not being utilised and we want to plant hemp and other crops so as to build the Mission’s economy. Industrial hemp will also serve the important function of earning foreign exchange, which in turn will provide us with the means to purchase the goods and services which the community and country cannot produce.
Mr Adrian pointed out that members have already begun to clear lands for the cultivation of other cash crops and legumes until the barriers are removed for the cultivation of hemp. He was high in his praise for the Toshao Mr. Lennox Shuman and the other councillors of the Mission’s Council for fully supporting the establishment of an industrial hemp Industry and recalled the successful meeting held recently with officials of the Guyana Hemp Association, the council and his group to look at the industry.
He pointed out that his group will be intensifying its education and information drive to sensitise residents and others of the importance of an industrial hemp industry on Saturday September 9th, 2017, when the community will host Indigenous Heritage Day activities.
