WEST Demerara and Georgetown romped home winners to qualify for the top four places in the inaugural GT Beer Super Sunday Night Cup football championship semifinals after winning their respective matches Sunday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club.
Unbeaten West Demerara came away with a 3-1 win over Bartica to top Group B as Georgetown joined them after moving past Berbice by a 3-0 margin .
Georgetown, who lost to West Demerara 1-0 for their only defeat, advanced by beating Berbice 3-0, as Quason McBean began the scoring for the City side as early as the 9th minute and then Darren Benjamin netted to double the score in the 23rd minute before Shane Morris closed out the win, which was decided in the first half through a strike in the 38th minute.
Having their lone defeat to West Demerara, Georgetown will advance as the number two team from their group which was topped by West Demerara.
In maintaining that unbeaten run in their four-team round robin-play, West Demerara turned back Bartica’s challenge with a 3-1 win which was sparked by the first goal of the game from the boot of the West Side’s Kevaughn Warde in the 21st minute and two minutes later David Blake found the back of the net in the 23rd minute as the first half ended in favour of West Demerara 2-0.
But Bartica were able to reduce the lead through Aloysius Edwards who netted in the 53rd minute, but Jamal Perreira pushed the score to a 3-1 advantage when he netted a goal in the 64th minute.
That was be the final score line. West Demerara will now face Essequibo Pomeroon from Group A, who finished second, while Georgetown will have to contest for a place in the final when they meet Upper Demerara who emerged as the top side from Group A .
These matches will be played on September 14 at the MSC ground in Linden.
