Dear Editor
PERMIT me to vent the frustration and concern of tenants (JPs and Lawyers) occupying offices at Maraj Building, Charlotte and King Streets, Georgetown.
Touts pretending to be JP and lawyers are infesting the Maraj Building, as they would line the entrance of the three-storeyed building fleecing potential clients of thousands of dollars as they ply their daily illegal activities without hindrances.
These touts will approach potential clients as they entered the building, asking the clients “if they want a JP or a lawyer, since most people will come to a JP or a lawyer to transact legal business. The touts will in turn tell the people words such as, “he is out of the country”, “he can’t do the work, “he is dead”, “I will charge you less to do the work” etc and so most people will believe, while the touts will lured them into an office, where they ply their illegal business. And what is amazing is that many of these touts are females, who are over 50 years old, while the males are in their 20’s and all dressed as if they are indeed the JPs or lawyers.
Lawyers and JPs are professionals and so they do not indulge in touting, and knowing that touting is illegal.
These potential clients have to ignore these touts and go to an office where there is a signboard indicating the profession and nature of business. Lawyers and JPs pay a rent to Maraj building; the same goes for people of other professions, such as accounts and others, who occupy office spaces and it is not fair for touts, who do not pay a rent, to be taking away their clients.
