… Doris out of men’s triple jump
GUYANA’S Winston George will be in tomorrow’s semi-finals of the men’s 200m at the IAAF World Championships, after he finished third in his heat yesterday at the Olympic Stadium in London, England, following the disqualification of two athletes.
Guyana’s other athlete at the Championships, Troy Doris, however, failed to move past his qualifying round in the men’s triple jump after a 16.43m jump was not enough.
Coming off a slow start, in lane seven, George finished with a time of 20.61 seconds, initially ending in fifth position, after getting edged out by Japan’s Shota IIzuka, who was fourth with a time of 20.58 seconds.
However, the disqualification of Canada’s Aaron Brown and South Africa’s Clarence Munyai later bumped George up to a third-place position, paving the way for him to be in the semi-finals.
His time was 0.20sec slower than his season-best achieved in Guyana last month at the Aliann Pompey Invitational.
Running in the second fastest heat of the day, the Olympian was overthrown on the turn as a cluster of Brown, Great Britain’s Mitchell Blake, and Munyai came away and charged to the finish line.
The three were the first to cross the finish line, in that order. However, Brown was later hit with the news that the season’s best 20.08 seconds, which was the second-fastest time in the heats, was rendered null and void after he was disqualified for a lane violation.
Brown had stepped on the inside line of his lane at the start of the straightaway and end of the curve.
Similar news hit Munyai. This moved Blake up as the winner of the heat with a time of 20.08 seconds, and Ilzuka moved into second place, also qualifying for the semifinals.
George will now be among 24 men moving through, including Wayde Van Niekerk, the 400m world record holder, and Jamaica’s Yohan Blake.
Over in the men’s triple jump, Doris’ first jump spanning 16.43m was the best he had for the day, fouling in his second jump and reaching only 16.24m in his third and final jump.
This was not enough to take him through to the next round, where USA’s Chris Benard goes in with the best jump after spanning 17.20m with just one attempt.
USA’s Christian Taylor was just behind with 17.15m.
