Industrial espionage and sabotage of GTT is bad for Guyana

Dear editor,
I WISH to first state that GTT has been a noted partner in the area of communication for many decades in this country. Following its takeover from what was called the Guyana Telecommunication Company, mighty works have been done to bring our communication sector into the 21st Century.
This company has been an excellent corporate citizen and we have reached such standards in telecommunications which include dedicated IP services which are integral for business and personal communication; dedicated internet service (DIA) which gives more speed and greater efficiency despite periodical difficulties; business DSL; international private leased circuit (IPLC); GTT business; PBX services and much more.
It is a real shame that as soon as GTT informed the nation and went on a campaign to promote its upgrades on faster and cheaper internet services, not long after did sabotage occur on its fiber optic cables which have been termed by Minister of Public Telecommunication, Hon. Kathy Hughes as ‘a breach of national security’. However, prior to this criminal act, there must have been industrial espionage as this was obviously done by an ‘entity’ with expertise in the field. These cases are not isolated to Guyana or even the Caribbean territory since much of this has happened in Europe and North America. It is unfortunate that a major competitor to GTT has been trying for so long to sabotage and destroy its name in order to take over its customers. When a particular European company came to our soil, it was not long after that GTT began to suffer major losses. This even happened several times in Atlantic Gardens where I live and it was not just an attempt to steal copper wires but it was sabotage; and the continuous damage to GTT’s cables speaks volumes. It might appear that certain people would like to take over GTT by upsetting the Guyanese population so that when the telecommunications sector is fully liberalised, its clientele would go elsewhere.
Who else can one say is involved with this? Who else in the country?
Definitely, it has to be a company operating within Guyana, who hopes to embellish the dissatisfaction of consumers from the poor service being delivered.
I wish to compliment GTT once again for the job it has done as a corporate citizen, the opportunities it has provided for employment of thousands, its contributions to sports, educational facilities, health and infrastructural development. It is my hope that the police will seriously investigate this matter and the company involved would be exposed. The sabotage of GTT is actually a sabotage of our country. It goes against the fabric of what we stand for, the decency and honor by which we abide.
My heart goes out to GTT and I call on the people of Guyana to understand what is occurring. Also, we must realise that GTT is under attack from a serious competitor who has a desire to crumble its base via any means necessary. We must stay loyal to GTT who has served us in good times and in the bad times. I will not deny that there is room for improvement but I’m positive it will come. To this competitor, we do not need the European style of sabotage in this country, and the methodological way of destroying other businesses. We are a people of love, care and respect, so any business should exercise these characteristics even when faced with competition. Thank you GTT for mirroring these traits.

Yours sincerely,
