THE Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Programme has received additional financial support with funding being provided by US-based Roraima Consulting Incorporated.

On Monday, Andrea Watson-James and Colin Westmoreland, President and Chief Operating Officer of the New York Company, presented Guyana’s First Lady, Sandra Granger, with a cheque for an undisclosed sum to assist with the programme. The donation was made during a brief courtesy call.

Watson-James said that the company was inspired and motivated to make the contribution to the First Lady’s STEM Education programme after witnessing the country’s performance at the recently held 2017 First Global Challenge in Washington, D.C. The First Lady said that it is heartening to see companies and individuals beginning to come on board to support the initiative.

STEM education is an important component of President David Granger’s policy to emphasise science and technology in the education sector. Recently, Mrs. Granger said that the success of the STEM Guyana team at the 2017 First Global Challenge is testimony of the value of these kinds of investments by Government and the Private Sector for the development of STEM education. The team placed tenth out of 165 competing countries.

The First Lady has placed a strong focus on training programmes, particularly in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in various communities, including Buxton/Friendship and Lusignan, which are being run parallel to the President’s National Endowment for Science and Technology (NEST) programme.

Overseas based Guyanese, Karen Abrams brought the Robotics Camp to Guyana in August 2016 and talks have been ongoing to establish Clubs and Leagues all across Guyana within the next year.
