–help make some dreams come true in new school year
THE Guyana Conference of Seventh Day Adventists in collaboration with the Adventist Diaspora in the USA, has outfitted almost 100 children with school supplies through their Children Community Outreach School Outfit Project 2017.
The Ministerial and Shepherdess Departments partnered with two overseas-based families, the Deans and the Scotts, to provide children across Guyana with backpacks filled with school supplies such as notebooks, pens and pencils, among other stationery.
Children aged five to 15 were selected, and were given the supplies on Saturday at the Church’s annex in Queenstown.
However, according to a representative from the Guyana Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, Cecile Thomas, “We’re not catering for Adventists only; we’re catering for everybody.”
The selection criteria of beneficiaries were established by the Shepherdess Association (Ladies of Eglanteria) in collaboration with pastors and members of Seventh Day Adventist churches within each pastoral district in each of the country’s 10 administrative districts.
“We selected the children from the communities and districts after evaluating their needs,” Thomas said.
While the supplies were given on Saturday to children from the coastland regions, Thomas related that the church will ensure that those in the hinterland regions receive their supplies as well.
She expressed gratitude to the Dean and Scott families for their act of mercy, and affirmed that the supplies will go a long way in ensuring that the children are better equipped this September for the new school year.
Overseas representative of the Seventh Day Adventists, Dr. Elethia Dean of the Dean family, related that one of the tenets of Adventism is education and that the family was asked to donate to the cause and was glad to oblige.
Through the overseas team, the Adventist Conference will be soon opening a Seventh-Day Adventist Primary School in Lodge, opposite the Davis Memorial Hospital.
This, too, will not only cater for Seventh Day Adventist children, but all children.
The overseas team is headed by Dr. Elethia Dean, who is also on another mission in Guyana. Through the Ophthalmic Society of the West Indies and in partnership with the Government of Guyana (particularly the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Communities), Dr. Dean and her professional counterparts are providing support for the strengthening of ophthalmology care and treatment in Guyana.
Other members of the Children Community Outreach School Outfit Project include Dr. Anthony Dean and family, Dr. Rosanna Dean-Scott (originally from Jamaica), Dr. Edward Scott, Jared Scott and Ana Scott. In addition, support was also provided by the Bethel Seventh-day Adventist Church in Akron, Ohio, through the leadership of Guyana-born Allyson Lee.
