TEAM Guyana picked up gold and silver medals during the first day of the16th North American Powerlifting Federation (NAPF) and 32nd South American Powerlifting Federation (FESUPO) Championships being contested in Orlando Florida.
In the female classic/raw category, 17-year-old local power lifters Britny Mack and Tineisha Toney picked up gold and silver medals respectively,..
Mack picked up gold in the 45Kg sub junior raw classic after putting down a 120kg squat, 45kg bench press and 115 deadlift for a total of 280kg.
Toney on the other hand picked up silver in the 57Kg class after a squat of160kg, a deadlift of 55 and a bench press of 150 for a combined total of 365kg. The winner was Emily Gardner (USA).

RomarioGonsalves and Demetri Chan from the Guyanese team, also contested yesterday in the 59Kg and 74Kg male classic/ raw classes respectively and were awaiting their spaces up to press time.
The debut lifters Gonsalves and Chan however made Guyana proud by breaking PanAmerican records each. Gonsalves broke the Squat, Deadlift and Total Pan American Records in the 59kg Junior Classic. Chan managed to cop a silver medal after breaking the Bench Press junior record in the 74kgclass with his140Kg benchpress.
The 15 member Team representing Guyana at the championships are in high spirits as the competition continues today.
The classic/ raw category of thecompetition concludes today as the females in the 72-84+ Kg classes and males in the 93-120+ Kg classes compete.
The equipped competitions will begin tomorrow July 6, as the females in the 43-63Kg classes and the males in the 53-83Kg classes compete.
On Friday, July 7 females in the 72-84+ Kg classes and the males in the 93-105Kg classes will compete. Finally, on Saturday July 8, the males in the 120-120+ Kg classes will compete.
