WITH preparations moving apace for Monday’s 60 miles open cycle road race, the Guyana Beverage Company (GBC), under its Tampico brand on Wednesday confirmed their sponsorship package for the event.
General Manager of the business entity, Robert Selman, officially handed over the sponsorship package to second vice-president of the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC), and former national champion Neil Reece.
The event is organised by the FACC in observance of CARICOM Day, and is billed for the Corentyne Highway in Berbice.
The race will pedal off from in front of the beverage company’s Berbice office at Palmyra, at 10:00hrs, proceed to the No. 51 Police Station and back to the starting line.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony Selman noted that Berbicians have given the company excellent support since its establishment 14 years ago in the Ancient County.
“This gesture is a small way of giving back to the community from where we garner our support, especially in the field of sport and education. This is one way to tell the people of Guyana and Berbice ‘thank you for your support over the years’,” Selman said.
He added, “The Company doesn’t spend its money on alcohol and parties. He noted that the objective is to try and keep youths off the street.”
Selman was high in praise of the work of the FACC and its founder, coach Randolph Roberts. He praised the FACC, calling it a professional organisation and one of the best cycling clubs in Guyana.
Roberts thanked Selman and the Guyana Beverage Company for their support.
He noted that the gesture by the Company should serve as an example for other businesses to follow.
Prizes will be awarded to the first ten finishers overall, first four veterans, first three juveniles, first three 12-14 and first three females. The first two club cyclists will also be rewarded. There will also be ten sprint prizes up for grabs.
The juvenile riders will pedal off from Nand Persaud and Company Limited on the Corentyne to the finish line. The 12-14 riders, along with the females, will pedal from Tain UG Campus to the finish line.
There will also be races for 9-12 and 6-9 BMX riders. They will be riding from the Berbice Bridge to the finish line.
All the top cyclists are in the country and are expected to participate.
The event will be started by Patron, former Mayor and prominent businessman Errol Alphonso and Selman.
