A POLICE Constable accused of assaulting a woman with a glass bottle, was released on $75,000 bail by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan on Wednesday.
Constable Gadi Hoyte, 26, of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, denied that on December 3, 2016 at Ekereku landing, Mazaruni River, he unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Maxi Duncan, causing actual bodily harm.
Police Prosecutor, Arwin Moore explained that while Constable Hoyte was stationed at the Ekereku police station, Duncan went to report a matter and the two parties had an argument. Moore said that the officer reportedly left the station and went to Ekereku landing and the woman confronted him there during which Hoyte took a glass bottle and lashed the woman to the left side of her face.
The prosecutor made no objection to bail but requested that the officer stay away from Duncan. The Chief Magistrate released Hoyte on $75,000 bail and transferred the matter to Kamarang Magistrate’s Court for June 20, 2017.
Additionally, the Magistrate ordered the Constable to stay away from the victim and bounded him on good behaviour until the completion of trial.
