THE Opposition newssheet, Guyana Times, again tries to twist the facts in its obsession to tarnish the coalition Government. The latest “twist” is its banner headline story, “President Instructs AG not to apologise.”
I have listened to every single word of President Granger, as he was speaking to the media. He said that the explanations given by the attorney general addressed ‘The Complaints’ which were sent to him regarding the exchanges in the High Court. Justice Holder was then presiding in a matter in which the Attorney General appeared for the Prime Minister who was named as a defendant.
At no time did I hear the President saying that he had instructed the attorney general not to apologise to the judge for remarks allegedly made by the attorney general. Even the articles in the Times did not repeat the President making any such remarks which the headline falsely stated.
The Opposition propaganda sheet also said that the Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, requested Justice Holder to recuse himself from the matter, and imputed that this was interference with the judiciary. The prime minister is a party in the case, and he is entitled to counsel like all other citizens in any court of law. It is his right to make a request for a judicial officer to recuse himself/herself when the judicial officer refuses to hear his lawyer. This is the basic right of the prime minister to an attorney.
The Guyana Times is determined to abuse freedom of the press in Guyana to promote its mis-guided and mischievous political agenda.
