High Court trial for trio accused of abducting cop

THREE men were committed to stand trial in the High Court for the abduction of a police officer during the multi-million-dollar heist at the Bourda Post Office in April 2015.

City Magistrate, Judy Latchman, committed Simeon Williams, of Lot 36, Savage Street, West La Penitence, Stravo Evans of 169 Middle Road La Penitence and Oliver Franklin of 102 Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, when the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the matter concluded on Monday.

It is alleged that on April 1, 2015, at Regent Street, Georgetown, they wrongfully restrained and abducted police officer, Andre July. Magistrate Latchman during her ruling said that after reviewing the evidence presented by Police Corporal, Shawn Gonsalves in its entirety, the court found that there is enough evidence against the three accused for the case to be tried before a judge and jury.

The men were out on High Court bail during the PI and Magistrate Latchman did not revoke such. In March 2016, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had withdrawn the robbery-under-arms charges against the three men to facilitate a PI into the alleged abduction.

It was reported that the men stormed a ‘Pitbull’ minibus, which had brought cash to the Bourda Post Office on the morning of the day in question. One of the men allegedly placed a gun to the driver’s head, while another relieved the police of his weapon.

One of the men reportedly took possession of the vehicle, while his accomplice forced the policemen into the back of the bus. It was reported that they drove off with the cash in the vehicle and abandoned the bus with the policeman at Cemetery Road, Georgetown.
