TEAM Evolution’s Michael Anthony will be looking to make a successful defence of his 35-lap title, when cycle coach Hassan Mohamed organises the 13th Annual Universal Auto Sales 11-race cycle programme around the inner circuit of the National Park on Saturday from 09:00hrs.
Anthony will be part of the Guyana Cycling Federation on a four-member Elite team to represent Guyana at the Upcoming Pan-American Cycle Road Race Championships set for San Diego, Dominican Republic from May 4 to 7.
While Anthony won the event last year in a time of one hour 18 minutes 69 seconds and is excited about making a successful defence of his title. He will, however, have to be wary of Team Coco’s Jamal John and Hamza Eastman and Raynauth `Obeahman’ Jeffrey as well as Team United’s Andrew Hicks, who were all selected to be a part of the four-member Elite team for the Pan-American championships.
The other team member is Team Coco’s Junior Niles who incidentally will also be seeking to make a successful defence of the veterans’ Under-50 five-lap title he won last year with a time of 11 minutes 56.67 seconds.
John has been in tremendous form since the season began and only last Sunday placed third in an 80-mile road race in the Linden Community. Prior to that, John won back-to-back road races and placed among the top six finishers in four other events that were staged since the 2017 season began.
Christopher Cornelius will be defending the juveniles 10-lap race which he won last year with a time of 24 minutes 29.85 seconds.
Keon Thomas is the defending champion and favourite for the five-lap race for mountain bikers.
Managing Director of Universal Sales, Shameer Baksh, a veteran cyclist as well, will participate in the veterans’ event and will make the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.
