Single mother remanded to prison for illegal ammo

A WEST Ruimveldt woman was remanded to prison on Wednesday by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore for the illegal possession of ammunition and cannabis, which were found in her home during a police raid last week.
Loren Springer, single mother of two, denied that on March 30, 2017 at her South Ruimveldt home, she had three live rounds of .38 ammunition in her possession when she is not the holder of a firearm licence.
Springer also denied that on the said day, she had two grams of cannabis in her possession. Attorney Bernard DaSilva in his bail application, explained to the court that his client was kept beyond the 72 hour period in police custody. He said that on the day in question, the police destroyed and carted off several items during the raid at his client’s house, including her gas bottle and passport.
Police Prosecutor, Simone Payne strongly opposed bail, as she cited the seriousness, prevalence and penalty attached to the charges. However, bail was granted in the sum of $25,000 for the drug charge but she was remanded to prison for the illegal possession of the ammunition. The matter was adjourned until May 3, 2017.
