Prison Officer accused of smuggling drugs into Camp Street prison

A PRISONER Officer who is accused of smuggling marijuana into the Georgetown Prison was granted $150,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Monday.

It is alleged that on March 28, 2017, Stephon Sobers, 23, of Block AA Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo took into the Georgetown prison 113 grams of cannabis. Sobers was unrepresented and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police Prosecutor Arwyn Moore did not object to bail but requested that it be granted in a substantial amount. The Prosecutor also requested that the accused lodge his travel documents with the court and report to the Criminal Investigations Department at Alberttown Police Station on stipulated days provided by the court.

Bail was granted and the matter was adjourned to April 24, 2017.
