GIFTLAND OfficeMax on Friday launched their Giftland Cares Project for Sophia youths and inked a contract for same at its sprawling Pattensen, East Coast Demerara mall.
According to Chairman Roy Beepat, the company has adopted Sophia in an effort to develop the community, engage youths in capacity-building training as well as sports activities.
Pattensen Development Council Chairman, Colin Marks, welcomed the Giftland Cares Project which targets underprivileged and school drop-outs for skills training, contending it gives young people an opportunity to hold their own in life.
Sophia resident Odessa Primus said the first visit by Giftland representatives was made last December and toys were donated to the children, but it was recognised that much more was needed.
It was then that the idea of the Giftland Cares Project was conceptualised as youths of Sophia are in dire need of skills training.
Beepat urged other businesses to get on board in the pilot project to aid in the development of Sophia.
