M&CC in push to collect rates and taxes

THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is embarking on a revenue collection campaign, dubbed “Operation Rates Recovery” from April 5, in an effort to rake in ‘every cent’ that is owed the municipality.

Public Relations Officer, Debra Lewis, told the Guyana Chronicle on Wednesday that the campaign will be directed to four wards in Georgetown, namely Kingston, North Cummingsburg, South Cummingsburg and Lacytown.

The property count for Kingston is 248 and $475,082,519 is owing altogether; North Cummingsburg has 343 properties and is owing $185,846,995; South Cummingsburg has 463 properties and is owing $317,321,937; and Lacytown has 351 properties and is owing $115,484,984.

Lewis said the M&CC has noted that whenever amnesty periods are offered by the municipality, those who owe do not even budge to at least have dialogue with City Hall.

She said City Hall will be publishing in the newspapers the names and addresses of all those who owe and will even be moving to take them to court. Persons, she said, can avoid such embarrassment if they make an effort to contact the municipality.

Town Clerk, Royston King, has said that the Council needs “every cent” to provide vital municipal services to citizens.
