A former policeman was remanded to prison on Tuesday after he was charged with uttering a forge cheque.
Haniff Hakeen Peters, 34, of Freeman Street East La Penitence, Georgetown denied the allegation when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on January 17, 2017 at Water Street, he uttered to a Teller of Bank of Bourda, a Guyana Bank of Trade and Industries (GBTI) cheque [number 025836942] dated January 16, 2017 valued $7,000,000 in favour of New wave Hardware and Engineering Services, knowing same to be forged.
Police prosecutor objected to bail, citing the nature of the offence and the fact that Peters may tamper with the prosecution’s witnesses. The matter was adjourned to April 12, 2017 and transferred to Court 3, where Magistrate Judy Latchman presides.
