POLICE Lance Corporal, Marlon Washington,was on Wednesday sentenced to five years imprisonment for causing the death of 16-year-old Denelsion Rose, who was struck down and killed in 2015 on the Washer Pond Road in Linden. Washington, 49 of Wisroc Housing Scheme, was found guilty of the charges of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to render assistance and not stopping after the accident. The trial was held before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Linden Magistrate’s Court and was prosecuted by Inspector, Vanetta Pinder.
Particulars of the first charge stated that on October 24, 2015 at Washer Pond Public Road,MacKenzie, Linden,while being the driver of motor car PRR 6502, Washington drove dangerously thereby causing the death of the teenager.
He was fined$25,000 each on the charges of failing to stop after the accident and failing to render assistance.
According to reports, Rose,called ‘Nello’ of Noitgedacht, Linden, was on his way home when he met his demise; his body was found by passersby. He was a sixth form student of MacKenzie High School.
Special Lance Corporal Washington was reportedly intoxicated while behind the wheel at the time of the accident.He then fled the scene and failed to pay the toll to cross the bridge to get to his Wisroc, Linden home.
The police,after reviewing surveillance footage,were able to confirm the identity of the driver of the getaway car. A breathalyzer test allegedly indicated that he had double the prescribed limit of 35% micrograms of alcohol in his system.
