Security boosted at border

….as Venezuelan drug gang threatens violence

SECURITY has been increased at the border village of Paruima and nearby Kamarang in the Cuyuni /Mazaruni region, following threats by Venezuelan drug gangs to persons living there.
Police sources told the Guyana Chronicle on Saturday that several ranks were dispatched to the Region Seven villages to boost the numbers in the area. Some nine ranks were sent to the border community of Paruima, sources in the area said Saturday.

According to residents, the mood at the two villages was one of fear and according to sources, village leaders have told the residents to be on the alert for any possible eventualities. Sources in the area told the Guyana Chronicle that the situation may have stemmed from an incident last November, in which a farmer was murdered by several persons and later burnt. A graphic video was provided of the man’s corpse after it was discovered near the Ochi River at Kamarang during the first week of November last year.
The body of Dexter Edwards was later ferried to the village as police investigated the incident. Three persons were later arrested by the ranks; however, only one person was charged.

On November 15, 2016, Presley Abrams, 26, was remanded to prison by city Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates court in connection with the death of Edwards. Abrams was represented by Attorney-at-law Glen Hanoman. A post-mortem examination revealed that Edwards had died from multiple injuries.
Reports are that Edwards and several others were on their way from Venezuela when he met his demise. Persons in the area told the Guyana Chronicle that his death may have been drug-related, since recently drug traffickers across the border from Paruima had informed residents that they were owed sums of monies by the men involved in last November’s incident.
