A COUPLE and their infant child narrowly escaped death Saturday evening when the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a motor car at the junction of North Road and Albert Street, Georgetown, around 19:30hrs.

On impact, the mother pitched into the trench and her baby was flung onto the shoulder of the road, inches away from the trench. It is not clear how the father landed, but the driver of the motor car appeared visibly shaken, even though not hurt.
The family appeared to have just left the market, for items purchased were strewn on the ground. Persons at the scene who immediately summoned the Guyana Fire Service ambulance, said that the motorcycle, CJ 321 was headed north along Albert Street and motor car HC 6379, owned by Piccadilly Taxi Service, was proceeding west along North Road when they collided.
Writhing in pain and unable to walk, the mother of the child was lifted out of the water and placed into the ambulance. They were all taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where the young woman, who appeared to have injured her back, was given priority treatment.
Clutching his baby as they arrived at the hospital, the father appeared to have been giving thanks and praise for their spared lives.
