THE body of a man supposedly eaten by piranhas was fished out of a canal in Zorg, Essequibo Coast in a decomposed state Sunday. The man was identified as Deodat Lakeram, 39, called ‘Krishna’ or ‘Corila’ of Zorg, Essequibo Coast. Reports indicate that Lakeram, who was unemployed, was last seen in the company of a 52-year-old fisherman on Saturday last. Police said that the man is suspected to have drowned between January 14 and 15. His face and left arm was presumably damaged by piranhas.

One resident said that the man, who returned from Trinidad November last, appeared to have been drunk when he fell into a canal in Zorg. “This man is an alcoholic that drinks all the time; and he lives alone.” A post-mortem is expected to be done on the body this week.
