SPRINTER Michelle-Lee Ahye and javelin thrower Keshorn Walcott were on Saturday named Trinidad and Tobago Female and Male Athletes-of-the-Year respectively.
The awards were presented during a ceremony hosted by the National Association of Athletics Administrators (NAAA) at the Festival Ballroom of the Radisson Hotel.
Ahye was a finalist in the women’s 100-metre, women’s 200m and women’s 4x100m events at the Olympic Games in Rio in August 2016 while Walcott, the 2012 gold medallist, won bronze and was the only medal winner for his country at the Olympic Games.
“It is a very proud moment for me,” Ahye said after receiving her award.
“I did really good last year and these awards mean a lot to me and it encourages me more to push harder for the season upcoming.”
Meanwhile, Cleopatra Borel, Walcott’s training partner at Rebirth track club was named Most Outstanding Female Athlete. Walcott was named Most Outstanding Male Athlete.
Khalifa St Fort captured the Junior Athlete-of-the-Year award (female) with Akanni Hislop, currently on scholarship at Louisiana State University (LSU), won the Male Junior Athlete-of-the-Year.
Rae Anne Serville of Memphis Pioneer Club, won the President’s Rising Star Award, one of two new awards presented on the night.
The other – the Academic Achievement Award – went to Che Richards of Oasix.
