ST Angela’s produced a breakaway performance to be crowned champions of this year’s Smalta girls U-11 schools football tournament which concluded yesterday at the Ministry of Education’s Carifesta Avenue ground.
Not even the overnight rains could have stopped the final or the display that St. Angela’s student seemed to have planned for their teachers and supporters as they overcame West Ruimveldt 2-1.
Nikasie St Jules opened the scoring for the Champs in the 6th minute before Carletta Ross’ 27th minute strike doubled the lead.
However,Gabriella McGarrell pulled one back in the 29th for West Ruimveldt who tried valiantly to level the score but time expired.
Meanwhile,in the third place play off, South Ruimveldt beat St. Pius 1-0 thanks to Raven Jacobs who scored in the 18th.
North Georgetown beat St Stephen’s 2-0 to take the fifth spot thanks to Tiffany Johnson (27th) and Kezia Parkinson (30th) while Enterprise who took seventh spot overcame St. Agnes who finished eighth.
Smith Memorial won the ninth spot over F.E. Pollard after winning 3-1 on penalties following a two goal regulation time tie. Aliyah Beverly (1st and 18th) marked the spot for Smith’s while Talia Wharton (5th) and Alicia Ollievierre (7th) scored for F.E Pollard.
11th place belonged to Winfer Gardens who won via walkover from 12th placed Tucville while the Redeemer vs St Gabriel’s game was a no-contest as was the St. Margarets vs Stella Marris.
Meanwhile,St Angela’s carted off the hog’s share of individual prizes as well with Wayne St. Jules being awarded with the best coach award,with Most Valuable Player being jointly shared between Carletta Ross and Nikasie St. Jules.
St Angela’s Theria Bishop was nominated the Best Goalkeeper while Gabriella McGarrell of West Ruimveldt was the tournament’s highest goal scorer with 10 goals.
