A 25-YEAR-OLD accused of armed robbery, was the centre of attraction in Magistrate Faith McGusty’s courtroom when he made an appearance before her on Wednesday morning.Jason Adams’ appearance was nothing short of a sitcom as he entered the courtroom with a broad smile and sat while handcuffed and shackled in the prisoner’s docks, sharing out chewing gums to other prisoners.
“How he get duh? They does search them men? Eh eh is a pack of Dentyne Winterfresh he get deh,” one woman said while poking at another female sitting next to her.
Adams is accused of being armed with a hammer on December 6, 2016 at Brickdam, Georgetown and robbing Baskh Mohammed of two cell phones valued $40,000. He did not have legal representation and pleaded not guilty to the charge; he explained to the Magistrate that he is innocent and is not a Guyanese national. According to Adams, he is from France, where served their military as a Sergeant.
“I don’t live here… I stop in at Pegasus Hotel but I does also stay by my side-chick in Durban Street,” Adams said. Magistrate McGusty smiled while the courtroom went hysterical. The Magistrate in her bid to outsmart Adams asked him questions in French; in response he said, “Wee-wee” in a strong Guyanese accent. The court was not buying Adams’story.
“Madam you know who is me? I’m from the Gaza…. Kartel is meh family; see we last name?” the defendant told the Magistrate. The Magistrate nevertheless remanded Adams until December 21, 2016 and transferred the case to Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Recently, his family took him before another City Magistrate to plead his insanity, where he was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
In 2014, Adams was charged for a series of robberies and assaults,for which he was granted bail. Additionally, in 2010 he was accused of stealing plucked chicken from the owner of a Chinese cook shop in Bourda, Georgetown. The matter was later dismissed.
