… Pele FC earn another scoreless tie
By Ras Wadada
THE Georgetown Football Club (GFC) registered their second win in as many outings when play in the Fruta Conquerors U-19 Academy League continued last Wednesday at the Tucville Community ground. The Vurlon Mills-coached ‘Bourda Blues’ had to stave off the stiff challenge of Buxton United in a game that replaced the original fixture that pitted Santos against the East Coast lads.

The organisers also disclosed that Linden’s Botofago FC have pulled out of the competition after playing two matches, citing the huge transportation cost as their reason for withdrawing.
The closely contested Group ‘A’ affair, which was the first of the double-header, delivered its first of three classical goals seconds before halftime.
A two-touch combination from an indirect free kick just outside the area on the attacking right stunned the Buxtonians as GFC took the lead. A deft touch on the ball by Rondell Peters was perfectly and powerfully struck with the right instep of captain Curtez Kellman, beating the Buxton custodian, low, at the near post.
Buxton levelled the score 14 minutes after the break when an unmarked Paul Kingston clinically nodded home at the near post from a well-measured right side cross from Leandrea Browne.
GFC regained the lead nine minutes later as diminutive midfielder Lennox ‘Tiger’ Cort caught the defence napping and broke free through the middle from just at the top of the area. His well-placed left-booter, low, to the keeper’s left, proved to be the winner as both sides defended stoutly to the end. It was the first loss for the United side.
The second game looked like a mismatch in the beginning, but the much smaller Pele FC players nullified all efforts by the far bigger built Uitvlugt Warriors to end the game 0-0. Pele goalkeeper Kevin Crawford was a standout in goal and thwarted many attempts by the Warriors.
The gutsy performance was the 2nd scoreless tie for Pele after being hammered 8-0 by the hosts in their opening Group ‘B’ match. The Warriors came into the match on a high after their 2-1 upset win over Conquerors last Saturday.
The League continues today at Tucville with another double-header beginning at 17:00hrs. Pele will oppose Order and Discipline in the opener and at 19:00hrs it will be the unbeaten Black Pearl against Uitvlugt Warriors in Group ‘B’.
