TWO Berbice men caught last year with 129 pounds of marijuana in Georgetown were on Monday each sentenced to 60 months imprisonment and fined $80,754,500 by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Twenty-five-year-old Fawad Hamid, known as ‘Not Nice, of McRae Street, Rosignol, West Coast Berbice, and Mark Douglas, 47, of Number 3 Village, West Coast Berbice were found guilty of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The incident reportedly occurred on March 12, 2015 following a shootout with police in Kitty.
According to police reports, police ranks, acting on a tip-off, made their way to Sheriff Street in the vicinity of Subs and Salads, where two suspicious-looking vehicles were said to have been.
On seeing the police arrive, Hamid, the driver of one of the vehicles, PJJ 8009, turned into David Street but was later cornered.
When the police searched his car, they found a white ‘salt bag’ filled with compressed marijuana on its front passenger seat, and another four with more of the substance in the trunk.
When cautioned, Hamid allegedly told the police, “A man give me the weed to bring to town, and we did waiting for somebody to pick it up when the police come.”
Before that, he reportedly told the police that he thought the bags contained dried coconuts.
Douglas, on the other hand, reportedly told the police when he was arrested, “A man tell me fuh clear the way fuh ‘Not Nice’ pass with the weed, and he go’ pay me $35,000.”
