AWARDS CEREMONY FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES OF ST. STANISLAUS COLLEGE

THE Saint Stanislaus College Alumni Association is continuing its effort to upkeep and maintain the academic excellence of their Alma Mater, by offering scholarships.

This year the college is observing its 150th anniversary and in its quest to boost the teaching compliment, the Toronto and Guyana Chapters of the Old Students’ Association awarded two scholarships each, to the University of Guyana, to four former students.

After graduation, these scholarship awardees will return to the college to teach in specific fields. In addition to tuition, the scholarships include book and travel allowances, along with a free laptop computer each, donated by the Toronto Alumni.

On Wednesday November 16, 2016, a signing ceremony was held in the Marion Forum for the students and their parents. In attendance were Mr. Kashir Khan, President of the Local Alumni Association, as well as Mr. Chris Fernandes, Chairman of the St. Stanislaus Board of Governors, along with members of the association, school administration, students, the awardees and their parents. At the ceremony the laptops were handed over by Fernandes on behalf of the Toronto Alumni.

The recipients of these scholarships are Arrianna Mahase, Jemuel Parasram, Rosemarie Shiwbaran and Semaka Felix. These students have been outstanding in academics and co-curricular activities and were recommended by the school’s administration.

Mahase wishes to pursue a career of teaching, specialising in the field of Computer Science; Parasram wants to pursue a career in the field of Business Management; Shiwbaran was the best graduating CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) student for 2015 and will now be immersed in a teaching career in the field of Business Management; while Felix, as the Deputy Head Prefect of the College, was involved in the planning committees of activities of the college that included Graduation and Prize Giving exercises and Teachers Day Celebrations. She wishes to pursue a career of teaching, specialising in the field of English with a minor in French.

In brief remarks Mr. Khan congratulated the students and expressed best wishes for success. He also pledged that the alumni associations would continue to support the college in its effort to provide quality education to its students.

In 2009, Ms. Kezia Bess was awarded a scholarship by the Alumni and has since returned to teach at the college.

  1. Just wanted to point out a small error. Ms. Kezia Bess’s scholarship was sponsored by a small group of alumni called the 59ers who entered Saints in 1959. This was arranged in memory of 2 deceased 59ers Courtney Blair and Donald Callendar.
