THE police have destroyed several ganja farms located in the Berbice River area, the Force said in a statement.According to the police, based on weeks of intelligence-gathering, ranks have been able to destroy several acres of cannabis, along with nine camps, on Thursday during a 10-hour operation in the Berbice River.

The cannabis and camps were found respectively at Hofwerk and Gateroy, located several miles out of New Amsterdam. In excess of 8,000 plants, ranging in height from two to six feet, and having an estimated weight of 17,000 kilograms, were found under cultivation, with makeshift tents and camps erected, under which harvested cannabis was hung to dry; while a large quantity, with an estimated weight of nine thousand kilograms, was already packaged in bags.

No arrests have been made so far, the police have said, but investigations are in progress.
