RESIDENTS of Guyhoc Square now have a recreational ground, thanks to the intervention of the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport of the Ministry of Education (MoE), which financed the project to the tune of $1.5M and executed same under its Ground Enhancement Programme. In brief remarks at the handing over ceremony, Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, said the project aims to enhance and develop community grounds which can be used by children and elders. She explained that close to 50 grounds countrywide are being rehabilitated so they can be made available for community recreational purposes.

During visits to two other grounds on which work is ongoing — at Freeman Street and at East Ruimveldt — Minister Henry said the MoE wants to “ensure that the grounds we work on meet the minimal acceptable standard of what is required of a recreational area”.

The grounds will be outfitted with stands and light-emitting diode (LED lights).

The Ministry of Education’s Department of Culture, Youth and Sport is open to collaboration with any ministry or agency that aligns with its mandate of providing green recreational spaces for communities.

The ground enhancement project is aimed at providing the platform for athletes’ development in communities across Guyana. This is part of the MoE’s plan to promote development of quality athletes by ensuring they have the necessary facilities.
